Contacts Overview
Contacts are at the heart of Transpond. They are who you send your emails and marketing content to. When you start working with Contacts it's good to think about how you want to organize them and manage their subscription status. This article will go over some of the different terms Transpond uses and how you can utilize the different options to best serve your contacts.
Groups
A Group in Transpond is what you use to manage a subscription. You always need to have at least one Group in Transpond, where your contacts are, and any time you ask someone to subscribe or unsubscribe, it's the Group they are doing that for.
Contacts can belong to multiple groups. Their contact details remain the same regardless of what group the contact belongs to.
We generally recommend that you don't use too many groups as then you make it harder for your contacts to manage their subscriptions, which in turn increases the risk that you're reported for spam.
Instead, if you want to be able to send emails to a subset of your contacts within a Group, we recommend using Segments.
Segments
A Segment is a dynamic filter of contacts. A segment can be within a single group or across all your groups. You can filter for a range of conditions such as email address, contact score or when the contact was created. But you can also filter for more advanced things like custom field values or campaign activities. Once you start combining filters it can become really powerful and it means you can target your marketing campaigns to the right contacts.
Segments update dynamically, meaning any time a contact is updated to meet or not meet the conditions of your segments, it will be added or removed from it accordingly.
Segments are used across Transpond, from standard email campaigns to Automations.
Contact details
All Contacts in Transpond need to have at least an email address. The email is the unique identifier for a contact. In addition to the email address, you can create your custom fields to record details like first and last name, phone number and any other information that might be unique to your business.
You can also tag your contacts to help you group and categorize them.
All these details can then be used to create segments, as detailed in the section above.
